Join us for this month’s CCA Coffee Club as we explore how organisations are tackling one of the most persistent challenges in the workplace – managing attendance and reducing sickness absence.

Many organisations take different approaches to measuring attendance. While some use the Bradford Factor, others focus on metrics such as Average Working Days Lost (AWDL) per staff year. Despite having dedicated resources, policies, and support structures in place, absence levels can remain stubbornly high, particularly in operational environments.

In this session, we’ll come together to share experiences and explore what’s working (and what’s not) when it comes to managing both short-term and long-term absence. With mental health often a leading driver of long-term absence, and seasonal illness contributing heavily to short-term absence, we’ll look at how organisations are responding in practical and meaningful ways.

Discussion questions we’ll explore include:
  • How are organisations currently measuring and managing attendance?
  • What strategies have been most effective in reducing both short-term and long-term absence?
  • How are organisations supporting mental health to address long-term absence trends?
  • What approaches are working well in operational environments and junior grades?
  • How can line managers be better equipped to manage attendance consistently and fairly?
  • What role do policies, early intervention, and data play in improving outcomes?
  • What innovative or alternative practices are organisations trying and what impact are they seeing?
This will be a great opportunity to share insights, compare approaches, and learn from others facing similar challenges.
