This week we held the first meeting of a new industry-wide initiative aimed at identifying  ‘what does good look like?’ across a number of core business areas – this first session focused on organisational design and business structure.  An effective organisational structure facilitates good management practices and clarifies relationships, roles and responsibilities, but it is a significant challenge to try and develop future-proof designs within a context of uncertainty and change.

At the meeting hosted by Tesco in Dundee participants probed charts delineating their existing organisational structure and shared challenges and aspirations around business configuration. There were clear commonalities in ambitions around managing change, being proactive and aiming for flexibility and clarity.

Many difficulties were also shared in terms of dealing with a multiplicity of clients or business activities, a legacy of structural features which are difficult to modify as well as engaging staff and avoiding fatigue with frequent modifications.

The rich qualitative data generated from these sessions is contributing to a larger piece of research being conducted by CCA Industry Council.  The research will culminate in a series of scenarios which will be presented and scrutinised on day one of CCA 18th Annual Convention being held in Glasgow on the 6th and 7th November 2012.

Our next ‘what does good look like?’ session will focus on the ‘voice of the customer’ and will be hosted by Tennents in Glasgow on 13 June.  To participate in this session, take part in the supporting survey or host a future session – please get in touch
